There have been no shortage of serious injuries inside of professional and amateur hockey caused by skate blade laceration. The most vulnerable part of an athlete’s body is the posterior calve area; namely the clave muscle, lower leg and Achilles tendon. One high profile incident involved Ottawa Senators defenseman Erik Karlsson whose Achilles was sliced 70% of the way through by another player’s skate.1

Serious injury caused by skate blade laceration in hockey are more common than one would think. A study from the Journal of Athletic Training found that lacerations were the most common injuries (27%), followed by contusions/abrasions (23.6%), fractures (17.3%), and sprains/strains (16.9%).2
